Finding the right bra size can be challenging, as an estimated 80% of women wear the wrong size. In this ultimate guide, we will show you how to measure bra size accurately and provide expert tips to find your perfect fit.
Understanding the basics
Before we dive into how to measure your bra size accurately, let’s cover some basics. A standard bra size is composed of a number and a letter. The number refers to the band size, which is the circumference of your body just under your bust. The letter indicates the cup size, which is the volume of your bust. Both elements are crucial for a comfortable and supportive fit.
Step 1: How to measure your band size
Wear a non-padded bra that doesn’t alter the shape of your breasts to ensure accuracy. Using a measuring tape, measure the circumference of your chest right under your breasts, where the bra band would sit. Make sure the tape is level and snug. Round the measurement to the nearest whole number. If the number is even, add four inches. If it’s odd, add five inches. This calculation gives you your band size.
Step 2: How to measure your bust size
This used to mean using a tape measure around your bust, but that method has mostly disappeared. Sadly, you will still find some fitters who grab the cloth tape (and if your fitter does, then politely walk away and find a better, professional fitter).
But don’t worry, I’ve got over 20 years of experience in the bra industry, including being the Regional Sales Manager for Triumph in New South Wales and running my own very successful premium lingerie shop in Mosman, Sydney, for over 16 years.
Existing bra method:
Take one of your best-fitting bras and use it as a reference. Fasten the bra on the most comfortable hook, adjust the straps, and ensure all breast tissue is properly positioned in the cups.
Understanding bra fit: Tips & tricks
Measuring is just the first step. The real challenge often lies in understanding if a bra truly fits. Here are some tips:
The band:
It should be snug but not too tight, sitting level around your body without riding up at the back. Most of the bra’s support comes from the band, so this part is crucial.
The cups:
Your breasts should fill the cups entirely without any overflow (which suggests the cup is too small) or wrinkling of the fabric (indicating the cup is too big).
The centre gore:
This is the part of the bra between the cups. It should lie flat against your sternum. If it’s lifting off your body, the cups are likely too small.
The straps:
They should feel comfortable on your shoulders without falling off or digging in. Remember, the straps only provide minimal support; the band does the heavy lifting.
Common fitting issues and their solutions
The band feels too tight:
Before jumping to a larger band size, try fastening the bra on the loosest hook. If it still feels snug, go up a band size but down a cup size to maintain the cup volume (e.g., from 34C to 36B).
Spilling over the cups:
If your breasts spill over the top or sides of the cups, try going up a cup size (e.g., from 34C to 34D).
Gapping cups:
If you have gaping in the cups, consider going down a cup size. Another solution could be to try a different bra style, as some shapes may fit your bust type better.
Shoulder straps dig in:
Loosen the straps. If they still dig in, it might be a sign that the band isn’t providing enough support, and you may need a smaller band size.
Best bra styles for different body types
Plunge, full coverage, balconette—different bra styles cater to different needs and preferences. Experimenting with styles can also solve specific fit issues.
Final bra fitting tips
Be flexible with your size:
Your bra size can fluctuate due to various factors like weight changes, hormonal shifts, and aging. Be open to re-measuring yourself periodically.
Try different styles:
Different styles offer different levels of support and shaping. It’s worth trying various styles to find what works best for your body and comfort. Remember some styles don’t have great hanger appeal but when on the body can be life changing!
